129 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Health the EU funding received by his Department in 1996; the funding which it expects to receive in 1997; and the relevant funds and budget lines under which such funding is received. [8025/97]

Limerick East): The only EU funding received directly by my Department is in respect of two health promotion projects and a research project. The first health promotion project, Smoking Cessation Programme for Pregnant Women is part of the framework of Europe Against Cancer programme. The total EU grant for this project is £18,259 of which £5,220 is due in 1997. The previous instalment of £13,039 was received in 1994.

The second health promotion project is within the European network of health promoting schools. The estimated EU funding is £25,902 in 1997 with the balance of £11,102 due in 1998. An application for £37,004 for continued support of this project from November 1997 to November 1998 has been submitted to the EU Commission and is awaiting a decision.

The research funding received by my Department is under the Biomed II programme. £15,717.44 was received in 1996 and it is estimated that £9,835.55 will be received in 1997 for a project of efficiency of scanning services. This is part of a global research project headed up by the University of Wales in Cardiff.

In addition, my Department receives EU funds indirectly via the Departments of Finance and Enterprise and Employment. This funding, which is included in the figures supplied to the Deputy by those Departments, is provided under the following headings:

Training for People with Disabilities. Funding is provided as part of the Operational Programme for Human Resources 1994 to 1999 which is administered by the Department of Enterprise and Employment.

ESF support in 1996 was £18.442 million and the estimated ESF support for 1997 is £19.079 million European Regional Development Fund support in 1996 was £2.799 million and the estimated European Regional Development Fund support for 1997 is £4.198 million.

Tallaght Hospital. Funding is provided through the European Regional Development Fund. European Regional Development Fund support in 1996 was £8.01 million and the estimated European Regional Development Fund support for 1997 is £5.51 million.
