Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Noel Davern

Question:

131 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Health the reason for the delay on the provision of an oncology unit at Waterford Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8098/97]

Limerick East): The management of health services, including the employment of staff, is a matter, in the first instance, for each health agency. A consultant oncologist was sanctioned by my Department on 25 June 1996 and Comhairle na nOspidéal subsequently approved the appointment. The post is before the Local Appointment Commission at present and it is hoped to advertise this position in the near future. When the consultant is appointed, a full medical oncology service will be provided for the south-east region from Waterford Regional Hospital.
