Ivor Callely

Question:

421 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the number of personnel working in his office on a non-established basis; and the number of such personnel who have unlimited use of mobile telephones which are charged to or reimbursed by his Department. [8281/97]

There are four contract staff employed in my ministerial offices, i.e., a programme manager, special adviser, personal assistant and personal secretary. For the purpose of performing their duties, my programme manager and my special adviser have use of and access to mobile phone facilities. The costs involved are paid for by the Departments of the Marine and Defence respectively.

The total cost in 1996 for civilian and military personnel was almost £54,000. The estimated costs for 1997 are of the same order as costs in 1996.
