Question:

91 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the number of taxpayers claiming the exemption limits; and the number in each category of exemption limit, such as single, couple, old age pensioner from 65 to 75 years, old age pensioner over 75 years or whatever breakdown is available. [8151/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, following the enactment of the changes announced in this year's budget, the total number of individuals qualifying under the exemption limits for either outright exemption from tax or for the associated marginal relief is forecast to be of the order of 192,200 for the income tax year 1997-98. That number is broken down as follows:
