Brian Cowen

Question:

17 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Justice the number of violent offences against women in each of the years from 1990 to date in 1997; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9143/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics in relation to the number of criminal offences reported or known is published in the Garda Commissioner's annual report on crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. While the main statistical table which sets out the number of indictable offences reported or known does not show the sex of the victim, the report does contain information on the sex of murdered persons and (since 1994) detailed statistics on incidents of domestic violence reported to the gardaí. Detailed statistics on sexual offences are also published. The latest year for which such information is available is 1995. The 1996 report will be published later this year.
