Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Correspondence.

Tony Gregory

Question:

252 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will request a response from the Garda to a letter (details supplied) from the parish priest of Seville Place, Dublin 1, further to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 249 of 28 January 1997. [9789/97]

I have consulted with the Garda authorities about the letter dated 25 March 1997 referred to in the Deputy's question and they have informed me that this letter was acknowledged on the next day 26 March 1997 with a proposal for a meeting for interested parties to discuss the contents of the letter. This meeting took place on 4 April 1997 at the Sisters of Charity Convent, which is located close to Seville Place. Five members of the local clergy and religious attended the meeting along with the Garda Superintendent and the Garda juvenile liaison officer for the area. The meeting addressed all the points raised in the letter from the Parish Priest and the Superintendent drew attention to the level of policing in the area and to the unauthorised taking of cars. I am satisfied that the parish priest received a very speedy response from the gardaí to his letter.
