Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Joe Jacob

Question:

96 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the substandard and unhygienic conditions at St. Cronan's boys' school in Bray, County Wicklow; if her attention has further been drawn to the delay which has already arisen since the proposal to build a new school was approved; if she will ensure that the project is expedited and that the school is provided for without further delay; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10207/97]

I am aware of the current accommodation situation at St. Cronan's boys' school, Bray, County Wicklow, and for this reason, I included the school in the capital programme. Inclusion of the school in the programme allows planning work to be undertaken.

The current position is that planning permission for the new school has been received and the contract documentation is being prepared. When the contract documentation is ready, a decision on the timing of the tender and contract process will be taken in the light of available finance. I am aware of the urgency of the case but the Deputy will be aware that I am dealing with a backlog of deserving projects arising out of the substantial cuts in the capital funding of primary schools in the 1988-92 period.
