Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Noel Ahern

Question:

160 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the situation in relation to the resurfacing of the playground in Sacred Heart school, St. Canice's Road, Dublin 11; when submission for grant assistance in this regard was first made; the grant which is required; if the project was previously sanctioned but not proceeded with; and if approval and works are expected in 1997. [10613/97]

The request for grant aid towards the cost of resurfacing tarmacadam at the Sacred Heart school, Dublin 11 was first made at a meeting between the school and my officials in 1992. Subsequently, my Department's professional staff visited the school and advised that a grant was not justified. The cost of resurfacing the area requested would be likely to exceed £60,000. My Department wrote to the school in December 1995 advising them to maintain the area and to restrict car access. No grant sanction issued in respect of the works. My Department's position on this matter has not altered.
