Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - PAYE Taxpayers.

Austin Deasy

Question:

42 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance the number of people registered as PAYE tax payers in the area covered by the Waterford tax office in each of the past five years; and the number of self-employed persons registered for tax during that same period. [10512/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the relevant information available is as follows:

Registered for PAYE at:

1993

May 1994

Jan. 1995

Jan. 1996

Jan. 1997

10,572

Notes
(1) The numbers shown for PAYE employees and self-employed are tax units. A married couple who has elected or has been deemed to have elected for joint assessment is counted as one tax unit.
(2) The numbers of self-employed tax units are the numbers on the tax record who were requested to complete Self-Assessment tax returns in each of the years in question. An additional number of tax units are on tax record as having been notified by inspectors of taxes that a tax return is not required from them until their position is further reviewed because their current incomes are clearly too low to attract a tax liability. It is not possible to establish the numbers of these units who are appropriate to individual tax offices.
