Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Registration of Vehicles.

Ivor Callely

Question:

34 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a breakdown of new and second-hand cars imported into Ireland for each of the years from 1993 to 1996; the issues of concern, if any, which have been brought to his attention regarding second-hand imports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11428/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners who are responsible for the registration of vehicles in the State that the number of new and used cars registered from 1993 to 1996 is as follows:

Year

Number of New Cars

Number of Used Cars

1993

64,275

33,940

1994

80,391

41,245

1995

87,204

44,591

1996

115,126

48,164

Various concerns have been raised from time to time by interested parties such as the trade associations concerning the registration and payment of tax on second hand cars purchased abroad. These concerns are taken into account in periodic reviews of the operation of the vehicle registration tax system.
