I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing Ireland's GNP and GDP per capita as a percentage of the EU average in 1973, 1980, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1995. Definitive figures for 1996 are not yet available but an EU estimate of GDP per capita is provided. The figures were converted into “purchasing power standards”, PPS, before being expressed as percentages. This is the methodology usually applied to take account of different price levels in the various countries.

It is obvious that the economy was turned around following the return to Government of Fianna Fáil in 1987 based on social partnership and Structural Funds.
