Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - Travelling Community.

Paul McGrath

Question:

47 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment the estimated number of traveller families in the State who have not been rehoused; and the percentage of these who have indicated a wish to be rehoused, rather than staying on the road or in halting sites. [12907/97]

Returns from local authorities on the annual count of traveller families taken on 29 November 1996 indicate that there were 2,183 traveller families living on halting sites or on the roadside at that date. Returns by the authorities on the assessment of housing needs carried out in March 1996 showed that 734 traveller households had been assessed as being in need of housing at that time.

Details of the returns are published in the Annual Housing Statistics Bulletin 1996, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.
