Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Equality Legislation.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

291 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will introduce legislation to promote equality for people with disabilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14874/97]

My Department is responsible for the provision of health and personal social services to people with disabilities. These services will continue to be developed in line with the Assessment of Need for Services for Persons with a Mental Handicap 1997-2001 and the report of the Review Group on Health and Social Services for People with Physical and Sensory Disabilities. Access to health services for everyone, including people with disabilities, is based on the eligibility criteria set out in the Health Acts. In addition, every effort is made to ensure that services are fully accessible to people with disabilities. In the circumstances, I do not have any plans to introduce further legislation.
