Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Prisoners on Temporary Release.

Tony Gregory

Question:

480 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the average daily number of prisoners on temporary remand who call to the training unit to sign on; and his views on whether it would be more practical to have them sign on in their own local Garda station. [14499/97]

I assume that the Deputy is seeking information in relation to prisoners on temporary release. The average daily number of offenders on temporary release who were required to sign on at the Training Unit in the period from 1 January to 25 September 1997 was 1.43. This figure is calculated on the basis of a six day week. Only offenders on renewable temporary release are required to sign on at the prison. This can be as often as every couple of days or as infrequently as once every year. Offenders on renewable temporary release are also required to report to their local Garda station as a matter of course.
