Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Michael Finucane

Question:

73 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources whether Article 3 of EU Council Regulation 2080/92 is implemented as it applies to forestry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15623/97]

Article 3 of EU Council Regulation 2080/92 sets out the maximum amounts of aid eligible for co-funding by the EU in respect of afforestation grants, maintenance grants, annual forest premium and various measures for the improvement of existing woodlands. The regulation, including the provisions of Article 3, is implemented in Ireland on the basis of the afforestation programme approved by the Commission in April 1994.

Question:

74 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the minimum distance which applies where small scale afforestation is considered where it is planted contiguous to existing residences. [15624/97]

Grant aid is not available for any afforestation within 60 metres of an occupied dwelling house or associated building without the consent of the owner of the residence. If the owner agrees, afforestation up to 30 metres from the dwelling house or associated building is eligible for grant assistance.

Question:

75 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the consultations, if any, Coillte has had with him in relation to getting involved in sawmilling; his views on whether an exclusive supplier of raw materials will be setting up in competition with companies in the sawmilling industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15625/97]

Coillte Teoranta have submitted to me a proposal to invest in a sawmilling project in Northern Ireland. Since receiving the proposal I have had consultations with a veriety of interested parties including Coillte Teoranta. The assessment of the proposal is still ongoing and therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment on any aspect of it.
