Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.
The following table outlines the numbers currently on each waiting list and the average waiting time per specialty at the Mater Hospital. The hospital has pointed out that patients on waiting lists are evaluated to establish the urgency of their treatment and priority is given at all times to patients needing urgent admission.
The Deputy will wish to know that under the 1997 waiting list initiative a sum of £500,000 was made available to the Mater Hospital for an additional 680 procedures in the target specialty areas. In addition to this, my Department is currently in discussion with the hospital in relation to its participation in the special initiative to reduce cardiac surgery waiting lists, details of which will be announced shortly.
