Vol. 481 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Pat Carey

Question:

136 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science when a suitable school placement will be found for a student (details supplied) in Dublin 11. [15995/97]

I am aware of the representations made by the Deputy in this case.

The selection and enrolment of pupils in second level schools is, in the first instance the responsiblity of individual schools. However, in exceptional cases, my Department does become involved in trying to establish how best the needs of individual pupils can be met and assists in seeking an appropriate school placement.

Certain information considered necessary to the identification of the educational needs of the boy in question was received this week from his parents. The case has now been referred to my Department's Psychological Service which will liaise further with the family and make recommendations on the most appropriate education provision for the boy. Every effort is being made to expedite matters to ensure that the boy returns to formal education at an early date.
