Vol. 481 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ombudsman for Children.

Austin Currie

Question:

12 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress, if any, made to date in the establishment of an ombudsman for children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15785/97]

Brian O'Shea

Question:

30 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children if he intends to establish an office of an ombudsman for children; and if so, when he intends to establish such an office. [15921/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 12 and 30 together.

I am at present considering the possibility of establishing an ombudsman for children but I am not convinced that this is the most effective mechanism for vindicating the rights of children. I am also considering other approaches that might be more appropriate in this regard.

I hope to be in a position to announce my decision in this matter shortly.
