Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Survivor's Contributory Pension.

Bernard Allen

Question:

196 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of widowers receiving a survivor's contributory pension. [16204/97]

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in the following table:

Widow's-Widower's Contributory Pension — September 1997

Widowers

7,708

Widows

89,258

Total

96,966

The survivor's pension, which was introduced in October 1994, extended cover to cover both widowed men and women. The "survivor's pension" was renamed as the "widow's-widower's contributory pension" in the 1996 Social Welfare Act.
