Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tax Liabilities.

John Browne

Question:

177 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford has to pay tax, PRSI arrears and weekly tax while he is on a FÁS community scheme with Enniscorthy Tidy Towns, County Wexford. [16819/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that deductions of tax and PRSI from the taxpayer's wages were made by his employer without reference to the inspector of taxes. The taxpayer began work with Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Association on 9 June 1997. On 14 July details of the amount of taxable unemployment benefit which the taxpayer had received before starting work with Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Association were sent to his employer. It would appear that when this was taken into account an underpayment of tax arose and the employer decided to collect the arrears on a week to week basis. The inspector has been unable to contact the employer by telephone to get precise information on the matter. The taxpayer is therefore advised to contact his Inspector of Taxes as soon as possible to clarify the position regarding his tax liability. When he has the necessary information, the inspector will issue an amended certificate of tax-free allowances for the taxpayer.
