Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Television Reception.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

226 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands when it is proposed to restore proper television reception for RTE 1 and Network 2 to an area (details supplied) in County Kerry which, in spite of the residents being licence holders, is not in a position to avail of the service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17022/97]

The issue raised by the Deputy is the day-to-day responsibility of the RTE Authority and I have no statutory function in the matter.

However, in accordance with long-standing custom, I am prepared to furnish to the House information supplied by RTE in response to questions relating specifically to improvements in reception of national broadcasting services.

RTE has informed me that it is aware that the quality of television reception in Woodford Manor, Killarney, County Kerry is inadequate. RTE reports that a survey has been carried out and that every effort is being made to locate a suitable site to install a transmitter to serve this area. RTE states that as soon as a site becomes available, and subject to planning permission, frequency allocation and capital availability, it will go ahead with the installation which will provide quality televison reception to the residents in the area.
