Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Capital Grants.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

297 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science the obstacles, if any, there are which would prevent him from raising the capital grant to voluntary secondary schools to 95 per cent; the annual additional cost to the Exchequer in this regard; the proposals, if any, he has to introduce such a change in the allocation of capital grants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17107/97]

The factors concerning the level of capital grants paid in respect of building work undertaken at voluntary secondary schools relate mainly to financial considerations. In addition, the requirement for a local contribution reflects the private nature of these schools.

The cost to the Exchequer of increasing the level of grant-aid would depend on the number and value of building projects proceeding to construction in any given year. In 1996, the value of the local contribution in respect of the voluntary secondary school sector was in the region of £1 million.
There are no proposals under consideration at present to change the level of grant-aid.
