Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Michael Bell

Question:

31 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to give sanction for a Garda closed circuit television system for the two largest towns, Drogheda and Dundalk in County Louth; if both towns are included for examination by the advisory committee set up by the Garda Commissioner; the funding, if any, he is making available for each project sanctioned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16869/97]

The Garda Commissioner has established a CCTV advisory group to review the future of CCTV systems as an aid to policing. They have prioritised the following locations for the installation of Garda CCTV systems: Dublin South-Central, Finglas, Cork and Limerick. I understand that the operational benefits of CCTV in other urban locations including Dundalk are under consideration by the advisory committee and that these will be scheduled as resources become available. However, no application has been received from local community interests for the installation of a CCTV system in Drogheda. Funding for CCTV is normally provided jointly by local community interests and the Garda Síochána.
