Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Criminal Prosecutions.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

54 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has for the prosecution of crimes against tourists by allowing the evidence of victims to be taken on video in their own country. [16994/97]

The Deputy will be aware that the prosecution of offences is the function of the Director of Public Prosecutions and I have absolutely no function in the matter. The Deputy may be interested to know, however, that I recently made an order which commenced section 29 of the Criminal Evidence Act, 1992. Section 29 provides that in any criminal proceedings a person other than the accused who is outside the State may, with the leave of the court, give evidence through a live television link.
