Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Ivor Callely

Question:

66 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of residents regarding the speed of vehicles through estates and residential routes in the city of Dublin. [16947/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the enforcement of the speeding regulations is given a high priority, as speed has been identified as a factor in many traffic accidents.

The Garda in their various enforcement campaigns combine the education of motorists on the dangers of speeding, particularly in built up areas, through radio and television campaigns, with a visible presence on the road. The Garda conduct road safety programmes in schools with a view to educating pupils as well as parents on the importance of road safety. Also, residents meet with local gardaí to bring problems such as speeding on estate roads to the attention of the Garda authorities. Information on the number of complaints made to the Garda concerning speeding in estates is not readily available and could not be obtained without expenditure of an undue amount of Garda time and resources. I have been assured by the Garda authorities that they are committed to the strict enforcement of the road traffic law in relation to speeding as part of their ongoing campaign of improving road safety.
