Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

90 Mr. M. Moynihan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will expedite a decision in relation to a person (details supplied) in County Cork who has been accepted to Templemore Garda Training Centre to begin on 28 October 1997, and who has requested a deferral until after June 1998, to enable him to complete his degree studies at the University of Limerick. [17097/97]

Under the provisions of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988 the admission of persons as trainee gardaí is a matter for the Garda Commissioner. I have no function in the question of granting, or otherwise, requests for a deferral of the date for admission to the Garda College.

I am informed that the individual concerned wrote to the Garda authorities on the matter on 16 September last, and that he was notified of their decision in a reply issued to him on 18 September.
