Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

101 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if redeployment of gardaí from Border duty to normal duties, in particular community policing, will take place in view of the reduced security risks during the current cessation of terrorist violence; and the way in which this will benefit the fastest growing area of population in Europe which is Dublin North. [17058/97]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel to different areas.

They have informed me that the deployment of gardaí in particular areas of the country is dictated by the policing needs of the region at any given time and they state that the policing needs of every area of the country are subjected to a process of continual assessment in response to changing circumstances. Hence the allocation of gardaí at the present time in the Border area is based on the current assessment of operational requirements and likewise, policing in the Dublin North area is continually assessed in the light of changing circumstances and needs. In the interest of security and crime prevention in general, details of Garda operational matters must remain confidential.
