I propose to take Questions Nos. 122, 123 and 125 together.

I will progress work, as appropriate, during my term in office as Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation on the priorities for sport identified in the Government's programme.

In establishing the new Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, the Government has recognised the important part that sport and recreation plays in the economic and social life of the country and one of my primary objectives as Minister in this new Department will be to maximise their potential in this context. I will also work to ensure that the opportunities afforded by our sporting tradition are fully exploited in the promotion of Ireland as a holiday destination.

Among my objectives over the coming years are my intentions to encourage greater participation in sport; to facilitate achievement of the highest standards among our elite athletes; to promote the maximum use of recreational facilities and, where appropriate, with a particular focus on the special needs of disadvantaged areas, to assist in their improvement and development of facilities.
The amount provided for sports in 1997 was £13.85 million.
