Vol. 482 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

35 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if the Government will provide a special financial contribution towards the cost of hosting the 50th anniversary of the Kerry-Cavan All-Ireland in the New York Polo Grounds in view of the significance of the occasion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15290/97]

I refer the Deputy to the text of my reply to Question No. 235, dated 7 October 1997 on this matter. In that reply, I indicated that, "there are no funds at the disposal of my Department which could facilitate the allocation of special resources towards costs incurred by organisers of hosting specific events such as the commemorative game at the Polo Grounds in New York. However, my Department does, of course, allocate funds annually, on the basis of recommendations from the Sports Council, to national governing bodies including the GAA. The grant to the GAA this year will amount to almost £130,000 for the purpose of assisting in the promotion and development of the national games".
