Vol. 482 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fireworks Injuries.

Question:

99 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of people injured or killed by fireworks in the last year for which data is available for the country as a whole and in the Dublin area; if he will give details of the number of injuries in this regard for each month for 1996; the measures, if any, his Department has taken to inform the public of the dangers of fireworks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17435/97]

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following table. The number of stays in acute public hospitals as a consequence of fireworks injuries are indicated by month for 1996 distinguishing between those resident in Dublin and the rest of the country. National figures on injuries from fireworks which do not require hospitalisation are not available. Data on mortality from the Central Statistics Office records no deaths due to fireworks registered during 1996.

Overall responsibility regarding the importation of fireworks falls under the remit of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. I understand that the Garda Síochána are, at present, running a campaign involving national and local newspapers, television and radio, highlighting the dangers of fireworks.
