Vol. 482 No. 2

Written Answers - National Heritage Plan.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

57 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she will bring forward for the development of a national heritage plan and local heritage plans; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17363/97]

As the Deputy will be aware, the programme for Government, An Action Programme for the Millennium, contains a commitment to developing a national heritage plan, and also local heritage plans.

My position paper, Caring for our Heritage, which was published in February 1997, identifies many of the issues which should be addressed in a national heritage plan.

Preliminary examination of these issues has commenced in my Department and I intend engaging in broad consultations as part of the process of preparing this plan.

The national heritage plan will set the context for the development of local heritage plans which will complement the national plan.
