Vol. 482 No. 2

Written Answers - Immigration Procedures.

Michael Ring

Question:

91 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason immigration officials at Dublin Airport denied entry to three Estonian au pairs in view of the fact that they were not in possession of a valid permit for employment when the Irish Embassy in Estonia had confirmed that it was not necessary for them to obtain a work permit. [17514/97]

In accordance with statutory provisions, immigration officers may refuse leave to land to non-nationals who do not satisfy the conditions set out in those provisions, such as possession of a valid permit for employment. From the information given to immigration officers on the arrival of the persons in question, the immigration officers were satisfied that work permits were required by law for the purpose of their stay here. Not being in possession of such permits, leave to land was refused and the persons in question were so notified, and of the reasons, by the immigration officers.
