277 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of people currently in receipt of full carer's allowance and partial carer's allowance. [17816/97]

The carer's allowance provides an income maintenance payment to people who are providing elderly or incapacitated pensioners or certain persons with disabilities with full-time care and attention and whose incomes fall below certain limits. There were 8,298 people in receipt of carer's allowance at the end of 1996. The current number of recipients shows an increase of 1,485 since then.
