Of the 55 primary schools in the Dublin 6, 8 and 12 areas, 47 schools have a remedial teacher service.

Some of the schools in question have more than one remedial teacher post. In other cases, a remedial teacher is shared between a number of schools. A total of 47 remedial teachers are in place and each delivers 28.3 hours service per week.

The number of hours remedial tuition received by individual pupils will vary depending on their level of need and the number of children requiring the service at any given time. Where the service is shared by a number of schools, the division of the remedial teacher's time is determined by agreement between the schools involved. The authorities of second level schools may appoint remedial teachers within their approved teacher quotas. My Department does not have detailed information in relation to the school authorities which have done so.

Ex-quota remedial teachers in second level schools are required to devote at least 12 hours and not more than 15 hours per week to recognised remedial education work which would involve work with class groups of not more than 16 pupils, with small "withdrawal" groups and on an individual basis; approximately three hours per week to testing and diagnosis, contact with parents and acting as a resource person for other teachers who may be concerned with pupils receiving remedial education; the balance of weekly teaching hours to ordinary classroom teaching.
