Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Funding.

David Stanton

Question:

378 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children enrolled in Gaelscoil Sheáin Úi Éigeartaigh, Cobh, County Cork; the level of funding, if any, which the school received from his Department in the past school year; the funding, if any, proposed to be made available during the current school year to this school. [17829/97]

There were 142 pupils enrolled in Gaelscoil Sheáin Uí Éigeartaigh in the 1996-97 school year. Enrolment figures are not yet available for the 1997-98 school year as the school has not yet submitted its returns to my Department.

The school received capitation grant funding amounting to £9,230 in the 1996-97 school year. This was based on the specialper capita grant for Gaelscoileanna of £65 per pupil, compared to the normal rate of £45 per pupil. The amount of capitation grant funding for the present school year will be decided following receipt of the school's September 1997 return.
Under the grant scheme to provide books for necessitous pupils the school received £336 in the 1996-97 school year and £469 for the 1997-98 school year. Principals of national schools apply for funding under this scheme on the basis of the number of necessitous pupils in their schools.
The school also received £3,278 in 1997 under the new grants scheme for minor works to national school properties.
