Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Third Level Fees.

John Perry

Question:

418 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if the fees already paid by a person (details supplied) in County Sligo will be refunded, or if he will receive credit in view of the fact that he did not take up a course at that time. [18078/97]

Prior to 1997 a non-refundable deposit was payable by students accepting a place in a regional technical college. Credit for this deposit was only allowed where a student deferred entry to the course in question. From 1997 no such deposit is required.

Arrangements relating to deposits were a matter for the Central Applications Office in consultation with the colleges. Following inquiries however, I understand that the student in question paid a non-refundable deposit when accepting a college place in 1994. He subsequently deferred his entry to college to 1995 but did not take up his place or seek a further deferral. In these circumstances the deposit is forfeited by the student.
