Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Chinese Entry to UN.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

26 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on whether the Republic of China in Taiwan should be considered for admission to the United Nations. [18030/97]

Only sovereign states can become members of the United Nations.

When Ireland established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1979 the Government of Ireland agreed to recognise the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China.

This "one-China" policy has continued to be the policy of all Irish Governments since 22 June 1979.
