Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Herd Numbers.

Michael Ring

Question:

111 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the regulations and criteria which enable a person to qualify for a herd number. [17616/97]

The herd number system is an administrative arrangement under the disease eradication schemes and is designed primarily for the purposes of disease control. For this reason, a herd number is allocated only where, among other things, it is clear that the herd in question will be maintained without the intermixing of stock and where herds are independently managed. The availability of adequate testing and housing facilities is also essential.

The general details in regard to applying for a herd number are outlined in the application form ER1, a copy of which I am arranging to send to the Deputy.

Question:

112 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be given a herd number in her own right in view of the fact that she owns over four hundred acres of land and is anxious to build up stock. [17623/97]

I have had this issue investigated and the position is that the applicant does not currently have separate housing and handling facilities which is a prerequisite for receiving a herd number.

Should the circumstances change, it is open to the person in question to make a new application.
