Question:

64 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the non-pay current expenditure in his Department in each of the years from 1993 to date in 1997; if a dedicated internal audit is currently in existence in his Department; the activities covered by the audit unit of his Department and the agencies under the aegis of his Department; when the unit was established; the current staffing by grade in this regard; and the body to whom the unit reports. Details of non-pay current expenditure in respect of the Defence Vote are as follows:

£77.6 million

1996

£81.3 million

1997 — up to 30 September

£59.5 million

The Department has an independent internal audit unit which may audit any area of activity involving public funds within the remit of the Department. The unit was established as a separate entity in 1989 and the current staffing consists of one assistant principal officer, two higher executive officers, seven executive officers and six clerical officers. The unit reports to the secretary general of the Department.
