Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Gas Interconnector.

Ivan Yates

Question:

115 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on the construction of a second gas interconnector between this island and the United Kingdom; and, if so, the proposals, if any, she has in this regard. [18562/97]

To provide infrastructure for the development of the natural gas industry and to provide security of our gas supply, Bord Gáis Éireann has provided a gas interconnector between Ireland and the United Kingdom. The capacity of the interconnector is sufficient to cater for the needs of the natural gas sector for the foreseeable future. However, in the light of the continued growth in natural gas demand and to ensure that all necessary further gas infrastructural investments are made in good time, my Department and Bord Gáis Éireann are carrying out a joint study of natural gas demand to the year 2025.
