Vol. 482 No. 6

Court Officers (Amendment) Bill, 1997: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to make further provision in relation to the manner of appointment of District Court clerks and to provide for connected matters.

Is the Bill opposed?

Question put and agreed to.

Since it is a Private Members' Bill, Second Stage must under Standing Orders be taken during Private Members' time. Deputy Shortall should therefore move that Second Stage be taken then.

In view of the urgency of this matter and in order to clear up the current crisis in the court system, will the Taoiseach provide Government time to deal with this matter?

The Deputy must put the motion that Second Stage be taken during Private Members' time. Will she put the motion?

I understand that but this is an extremely urgent matter as there is a crisis in the courts.

That point can be made later. Will the Deputy move the motion?

The difficulty is that it will take some weeks.

The Deputy can raise it on the Order of Business once it is on the Order Paper. Will the Deputy move the motion?

I move: "That the Bill be taken in Private Members' time."

Question put and agreed to.
