483 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools and pupils at primary level in Dublin 3, 5 and 9; the number of these who have a remedial teacher service; and the number of remedial teachers involved in this regard. [19165/97]

There are 60 mainstream primary schools in Dublin, 3, 5 and 9. The enrolment in these schools on 30 September 1996 was 16,775 pupils. Fifty-four of these schools have a remedial teacher service. There are 51 remedial teachers providing this service.

484 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools and pupils at secondary level in Dublin 3, 5 and 9; the number of these who have an ex-quota remedial teacher; and the number of remedial teachers involved in this regard. [19166/97]

There are 26 second level schools, with a total enrolment of 15,297 pupils, in the areas in question. Eighteen of these schools have an ex-quota remedial allocation. The total ex-quota allocation in respect of remedial in these schools for the 1997-98 school year is 20.75 wholetime teacher equivalents. The authorities of second level schools may appoint remedial teachers within their approved teacher quotas. My Department does not have details of the school authorities which have done so.

485 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the total number of remedial teachers at primary level and the total number of ex-quota remedial teachers at second level currently provided by his Department; and the cost of the provision in this regard. [19167/97]

The total number of remedial teachers at primary level is 1,242 and the total number of ex-quota remedial teachers at second level is 346. The estimated annual cost of these services is £42 million.
