Written Answers. - Radon Gas.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

38 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will ensure that adequate funding is available to allow for the full implementation of the radon grant scheme in 1998; if the necessary preparatory work has been completed to allow the scheme to start on 1 January 1998; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14930/97]

Ivan Yates

Question:

122 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself that the public is sufficiently aware of the health risks of radon gas in houses; and the plans, if any, she has to step-up a public awareness campaign in this regard. [18569/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 122 together.

Under the Radiological Protection Act, 1991, the RPII is responsible for promoting public awareness of the health risks associated with radon gas in houses. I understand that the Institute review its public information services to the public in this area on a regular basis.

I am continuing to examine ways in which the public can be best assisted when dealing with the problem of radon in existing dwellings.

In an effort to determine the best practical approach to address the radon problem a small ministerial committee to advise Government on all feasible options has been established. I will be assisted on this committee by Deputy Bobby Molloy, Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government, and Deputy Tom Moffatt, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children.
The Committee has commenced its work already and will report to Government in the near future.
