Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Transport Subventions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

90 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will give a breakdown of the subvention given to CIE and Iarnród Éireann on a yearly basis over the past five years; if she will give details of the total moneys given to semi-State bodies involved in the delivery of transport services for each of the years from 1991 to 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18529/97]

Only two of the State bodies, involved in the delivery of transport services, received subventions from my Department, during the period 1991 to 1996. They are Are Lingus and CIE. In the case of Aer Lingus, the company was provided with an Exchequer subvention by my Department of £0.9 million in 1995 and £0.9 million in 1996 in accordance with EU Council Regulation 2408/92 in respect of the provision of air services from Dublin to the regional airports in Kerry and Galway. An equity injection of £75 million was also paid to Aer Lingus in 1993, £50 million in 1994 and £50 million in 1995 to support a restructuring programme. In the case of CIE, the financial assistance provided to the company, and to its subsidiary Iarnród Éireann, is detailed in the following schedule:
