Vol. 482 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tree Day School Project.

Derek McDowell

Question:

48 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the number of schools which participated in the 1997 Tree Day; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19117/97]

The Tree Day School Project which took place on 23 October 1997 was organised by the Tree Council of Ireland and was funded by the forest service of my Department with the assistance of the EU. The basis of the project was that a full day in the primary school curriculum, with the approval of the Department of Education, was devoted exclusively to the study of trees. More than 3,300 primary schools involving 21,000 teachers were circulated with a fully illustrated tree day resource pack which covered over 40 tree related topics and which was complemented by outdoor activities.

I understand from the Tree Council that the project was an outstanding success.
