Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Teachers' Travel and Subsistence Expenses.

David Stanton

Question:

279 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the travel and subsistence allowances paid to teachers taking part in all types of inservice courses involving his Department. [19592/97]

In addition to moneys provided to course organisers in respect of meals, etc., for participants at approved courses, individual teachers may also claim payments for travel and subsistence, within limits, for attendance at certain courses. In the case of remedial training courses, an overnight allowance, where necessary, of £19.91 may be claimed and in the case of certain post-primary courses generally provided by course organisers outside of normal school hours, an overnight contribution of £12.7 may be claimed.

Travel expenses, where approved for the particular course or programme, are allowed on the basis that public transport is used wherever this is possible. Where public transport is unavailable, a car mileage allowance of 21p per mile may be claimed, subject to certain conditions. In all cases, course organisers are expected to organise courses as economically as possible.
