Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cattle Testing.

Michael Ring

Question:

123 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to reintroduce compulsory testing for tuberculosis and brucellosis of animals before they are sold, rather than on a yearly basis for suckler cow and in-calf heifers, in view of the increased number of cases reported so far in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19440/97]

It is a requirement that all cattle must undergo an annual TB test and all eligible cattle must undergo either an annual blood test or be milk ring tested for brucellosis.

I have no plans at this stage to introduce any further testing requirements in relation to TB. I am currently considering what additional measures are required to cope with the deteriorating brucellosis position.
