Vol. 483 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Relief.

Ivor Callely

Question:

160 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the total revenue generated from pre-school services for the years 1976, 1986 and 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19782/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that statistics are not available which would enable the information requested by the Deputy to be provided in respect of all the years requested.

The total income tax and corporation tax liability of playschools, kindergarten and Montessori schools for the years 1994-95, the latest year for which the figures are avilable, is of the order of £980,000. This does not, however, include creches which are classified elsewhere with other miscellaneous personal services and which cannot therefore be separately identified without carrying out an individual examination of all the tax returns for such cases. Such an examination could be carried out only at a disproportionate cost.

Corresponding information in respect of PRSI and on other taxes and duties either could not be obtained, or could not be obtained without undertaking inquiries which could be carried out only at disproportionate cost.
