Vol. 483 No. 1

Written Answers. - European Central Bank Presidency.

Dick Spring

Question:

93 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if he was consulted by the French Finance Minister regarding the public proposal made by France that Mr. Jean Claude Trichet should be the President of the European Central Bank; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19703/97]

Mr. Jean-Claude Trichet was nominated as a candidate for the Presidency of the European Central Bank by the French President and Prime Minister on 4 November last, in a letter to the President of the European Council. The nomination was a matter for the French authorities and I was not consulted in advance of the announcement.
