Alan Shatter

Question:

126 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children whether his Department will provide funding for the research project into genetic epidemiology proposed by the director of the Boyne Research Institute; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19967/97]

I intend to take Questions Nos. 48 and 126 together.

In 1996, the director of the Boyne Research Institute made an application for funding to undertake a research project in the area of genetic epidemiology to the Health Research Board which is the statutory body with responsibility for health research in Ireland. The application was one of the 156 research grant applications received by the Health Research Board during 1996. Unfortunately on this occasion its application was not one of those recommended for funding. No application for funding was received from the institute in 1997 but it is still open to it to resubmit its proposal for inclusion in the grant applications for 1998.
